Dekalb Sheriff, Jeff Mann, under investigation by the POST Council and a special committee appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal, is suspended for a week. In an email to sheriff staff members Mann stated “I cannot ask my employees to abide by a code of conduct unless I am willing to subject myself to it as well,” Mann “In fact, I must be held to an even higher standard.” Mann further indicated that this was the maximum penalty that he could impose on himself for these allegations. He concluded that he would donate a weeks’ worth of salary to a charity.
Mann is under investigation after an alleged incident involving Piedmont Park, his Penis, and running from an Atlanta Police Department Officer. He has been charged with indecent exposure and obstruction of justice. The incident, late on a recent Sunday night, was reported that Mann was masturbating in the park in a well-known “no tell” area of the park. He allegedly left his vehicle to have a better handle on the situation. Upon being identified with a flashlight by the officer, Mann was the subject of a brief foot-race.
The Governors’ council, that includes two Sheriffs, could suspect Mann for up to 90 days. They have about 15 days to conclude their investigation. The POST Council could revoke his POST certification making Mann ineligible to serve as the elected Sheriff of Dekalb County.
Mann’s attorney has called on the governor to end the investigation citing the lack of jurisdiction since the charges were not criminal, but rather violations of local ordnances.
