Rep. Steve Scalise was released from the hospital where he was recovering from a gunshot wound.
Rep. Scalise, along with fellow republicans, was shot during a GOP congressional baseball practice. The practice was a final practice before the game, an annual charity fund raiser. Two Capitol Police officers, a lobbyist, and a GOP staffer were also shot in the same attack.
Medstar released a statement indicating Scalise was “in good spirits and is looking forward to his return to work” and further stated he has “made excellent progress in his recovery.” He will continue his recovery in a rehabilitation center. The wounds were originally considered life-threatening. Rep. Barry Loudermilk was witness to the event and stayed with Scalise, praying, until paramedics arrived.
Scalise suffered a gunshot wound to his hip that damaged both his bones and organs. The gunman, later identified as James Hodgkinson, was shot and killed by Capitol Police. President Trump Stated “We’ve had a very, very divided country for many years. And I have a feeling that Steve has made a great sacrifice, but there could be some unity being brought to our country.”
It was reported that the gunmen targeted this practice specifically because they were Republicans. It was later determined the gunman was a Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer. His anger against America has festered and grown based on his social media postings over the last several years. It has been suggested this attack could have been avoided.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
